Resilient Bernadette’s Journey at Duke

Living with a permanent disability is tough. But when it prevents you from doing your job? It makes life even tougher.

39-year-old Bernadette L. from Victoria was in that very position.

But showing a huge amount of resilience, she’s started CHC32015 Certificate III in Community Services at Duke and has big plans to get back into the workforce.

Even with a Bachelor of Education under her belt already.

Managing Disability

Bernadette lives with disability, having had multiple spinal surgeries.

“I went to uni, I’ve worked in government and other roles. But because of my disability, I haven’t been able to work for 8 years.”

Bernadette felt a bit of hesitation before studying again, but she’s now super glad she started at Duke.

“It actually wasn’t something I wanted to do initially, because I’ve got a Bachelor in Education already. But since I’ve started, I’ve really enjoyed it – it’s been refreshing.”

With her friendly and empathetic nature, we know that she’ll be able to bring a lot of positive energy and lived experience to her future role in community work.

Bernadette’s Wins at Duke

Bernadette has appreciated the ability to study on her phone and gain new perspectives on community work.

She loves the idea of strengthening her resume and having another qualification under her belt, and looks forward to the opportunity of helping people once she’s finished.

Next Moves for Bernadette

Bernadette is keen to get a taste of community services in a practical sense.

“I’d like to get hands-on experience. You can know the textbook back-to-front, but if you don’t know how to implement that, then you’ve wasted your time.”

She encourages others in her position to give it a try and to “not be scared”.

Keep up the great work, Bernadette!
